What is DOCSIS/CableLabs?
DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Systems Interface Specifications) is a standard that defines the support interface requirements for data over cable systems. DOCSIS allows cable television operators to add high-speed and telephony data to the current cable TV (CATV) system. DOCSIS 1.1 was issued in April of 1999. Cable modems conforming to DOCSIS have been widely in use since 1999 in areas where cable operators offer service. This enables over-the-counter sales of cable modems in local retail computer stores. This gives the subscriber the opportunity to decrease long-term service bills by side-stepping cable modem retail fees.
